This is so important. What you said about copy and paste face is so true, everyone now looks alike with lash extensions, frontal and Botox. If care is indeed not taken, we will forget what we actually look like.
It’s important that we get comfortable with our looks aside all this. I love this essay so much.
This is absolutely nothing against you because I’ve been there- but it is so sick and twisted that we live in a society that makes girls and women feel this way. We have lives to live. We could spend our time, energy, and money on literally anything else - but instead we spend it hating ourselves
This is Great. I used to be the same away, would never leave my house without make up, couldn’t stand how I looked. The older I got the more I decided that I was fine just the way I am. Beauty is skin deep.
i actually clicked on this with the intention of thinking in my head this is just going to be the same thing everyone always says “it’s bad for your skin” “ no one cares” but it was so eye opening especially the part about associating no makeup with a state of unreadiness. it struck home because that’s what i do every single day. i wakeup up and i wont leave the house unless my face is beat. i don’t take pictures without makeup, i don’t leave the house comfortably and confidently without makeup, and my day is absolutely ruined because all i can think about is how “ugly” i am. this was so insightful thank you so much for writing this.
The pressure to wear makeup is so real. I feel like the messaging that to look “nice” or “put-together” you have to have makeup on, is so sexist but it’s also kind of inescapable! I’m definitely guilty of feeling messy if I don’t have makeup on. I moved to the beach two years, and the slightly more relaxed atmosphere has helped me start to shorten my makeup routine, sometimes even getting comfortable going out with none! It’s sooo freeing
Ugh this is so so so good Emilie! I really saw myself in this piece and can really relate to this. Also what an interesting event to ask to turn up with no makeup!? I’d be afraid too but I love how empowering it is! 💓

Couldn’t agree more!
I feel like that collection concealer was a universal experience! Loved the essay <3
Thank you so much ❤️

It’s what’s on the inside that counts.
Thank you so much for reading 💖
Agree but when it comes to SPF - I’d rather have someone wear it for the “wrong” reasons (eg anti aging) than not at all. It does prevent skin cancer
Otherwise, great post :)
I’m binge reading your Substack posts. You are genuinely such an interesting writer and your topics are so relatable I love it!!

This was such a comforting read as always. Your writing is always so relatable and touching. This is one of my favourites ❤️
Great topic! My friends and I were recently discussing how we are shifting towards embracing our natural beauty. Less is more!
